Makeup artists (MUAs) are critical to the success of any shoot. A good MUA uses the right combination of cosmetics to illustrate the beauty of their subject. Cosmetic companies also continue to evolve, with scientific advancements bringing flattering products that translate perfectly in the digital age. Speaking of MUAs and cosmetics, did you know that Max Factor was one of the first and most influential MUAs in history? Early in his career, Max brought his cosmetic creations to the big screen by painting the faces of unforgettable movie stars including Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Judy Garland, just to name a few. Being the ultimate MUA, Max designed custom makeup formulas for each of his clients to ensure their beauty was perfectly captured on film. His grandsons continued the family legacy by creating Smashbox cosmetics which was sold to Estee Lauder a few years ago. Interestingly enough, a lucky lady in Redondo Beach just found personal documents belonging to the late Max Factor in her garage, some of which included his memoirs. We can only imagine what interesting stories of early Hollywood history are documented on those pages!
